I am a Northern California based photographer and an avid and lifelong student of the photographic arts.  I still have some of the first images that I produced while growing up in Michigan with a 110 cartridge camera supplied by my parents.  During high school I took a black and white photography course where I was introduced to darkroom technique and made my first attempts at creating art with a camera.  I’ve been hooked ever since.

Through many years of schooling I frequently managed to set up makeshift darkrooms and keep photography going as a welcome distraction from studies.  In 2003 I completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry (unrelated to photography) and moved to California for work.  Living in the west, a latent interest in backcountry pursuits began to take hold.  These days I do a bit of rock climbing, a healthy bit of mountaineering and a whole lot of skiing.  At some point I decided that hauling camera gear around might keep in check my bad habit of soloing sketchy and remote third class terrain, and landscape photography in the mountains became a serious pursuit.

While I’m frequently employing digital equipment these days, I love the traditional techniques and continue to strive to develop those skills.  I now shoot with both medium format and large format film kits as well as using a number of vintage 35mm lenses with both film and mirrorless digital bodies.  Yup, turning into a bit of a collector.  On the increasingly rare occasion that I can make the time, I enjoy blogging about my adventures and all this fun gear at chromadic.com.

In addition to my personal work, I enjoy working in an educational capacity and taking a limited number of client engagements.  If you have an interesting project to propose please visit my For Hire page.
